Equine Portrait Session FAQ’s
How are the photos taken? Will you be using lights or backdrops?
No backdrops or studio lights required! All we need is access to a barn aisle entryway or something similar. Even ground and a shaded doorway are all it takes to create these portraits. Your horse will be positioned in the opening to achieve the correct lighting, and the rest is brought to life through my editing process.
How long does a session take?
Depending on your chosen package, sessions typically last 15–30 minutes per horse. We are mindful that horses have their own schedules and attention spans, and we take great care to make the experience positive and stress-free for everyone involved.
Does my horse need to be trained to do the poses?
A select few poses do require prior training. The Spanish Walk or a "smile," for example. However, most poses require no preparation at all. Using your horse's natural behaviors, my assistant and I will guide them into poses that flatter them most and that they are comfortable and willing to offer!
We use different tools, like cat toys, mirrors, and treats to grab your horse’s attention!
My horse has a scar on its neck. Can you edit that out?
Absolutely! Just let me know before or during your session! I will not retouch any naturally occurring markings unless requested. Minor blemishes such as coat imperfections, fly bites, and scars can be addressed at no additional charge when communicated ahead of time. Requests made after the shoot date are subject to a retouching fee. Larger requests, such as significant staining or a damaged mane or tail, may require an additional fee, and in some cases, rescheduling may produce the best result. When in doubt, reach out before your session, and we can discuss your options!
How much should I groom my horse for portraits?
Show-level turnout is always recommended. A clean, clipped, and polished horse will produce the most striking portraits. While minor retouching is available, no amount of editing replaces good preparation. This applies to tack as well. Clean, conditioned leather and polished hardware make a significant difference in the final image. You are responsible for your horse's presentation on session day, so come ready to shine!
What is a “Naked Halter”?
The Naked Halter is a specialized halter made from an ultra-thin material, designed specifically to be edited out of the final image, leaving your horse looking completely unrestrained. It's a beautiful way to showcase your horse in a way that feels timeless and unencumbered. If you'd like to include the naked look in your gallery, just let me know before your session!

How long will it take to receive my photos?
My standard turnaround time is approximately three to four weeks. I will provide a more specific estimate on your session date. Each portrait is edited down to the individual hair. This level of detail takes time, and I never rush the process. That commitment to quality is what makes these images worth waiting for.

Do you work with all breeds/sizes?
Yes! I have worked with a wide variety of breeds and disciplines over the years and genuinely love the diversity. I do ask that you share your horse's breed and discipline in advance so I can tailor the session to best highlight their conformation, breed characteristics, and personality.
Can I be in the portraits with my horse?
Equine portraits are designed as fine art pieces celebrating your horse as the subject. For portraits that include you and your horse together, please visit my Horse & Rider investment packages!
What if my horse is nervous or won’t stand still?
It's completely normal for horses to be unsure about a stranger arriving at their barn with a camera. There's no need to worry, many of my favorite poses actually incorporate movement, and your horse only needs to reach the desired position for a fraction of a second for me to capture it. We are experienced in reading horse behavior and will always prioritize a safe, comfortable environment. In the rare case that things become unsafe, we will pause and reassess. But in most cases, a little personality goes a long way.
What backgrounds are available?
Black and white backgrounds are included in both the Signature and Premium packages. I ask that you specify your preferred backgrounds and quantities before your session, as white backgrounds require a slightly different setup. Textured backgrounds are available as an upgrade for $45 per image. A beautiful option for clients looking to go beyond the classic black background portrait.
How will I receive my gallery?
Your completed gallery will be delivered to you through an online gallery portal. Images are delivered as personal-use digital files, optimized for social media, flyers, business cards, and everyday sharing. All images include a watermark for personal use. High-resolution, unwatermarked files with exclusive rights are available for purchase. Please reach out if you're interested in that option.
How does the fine art ordering process work?
After your photoshoot, you have the option to purchase a variety of fine art products (framed prints, canvas prints, etc.). These products are created using the non-watermarked, high-resolution files.
What happens if it rains?
Weather can be unpredictable, and I monitor conditions closely leading up to every session. If the weather becomes a concern, I will contact you promptly to reschedule at no additional charge. Your experience and the quality of your portraits always come first.
